After following up a predictable humbling at the hands of Spain with a 2-0 victory against France at Wembley, which almost paled into insignificance given the events of the past week, England’s footballers return to Premier League action this weekend.
After following up a predictable humbling at the hands of Spain with a 2-0 victory against France at Wembley, which almost paled into insignificance given the events of the past week, England’s footballers return to Premier League action this weekend.
The fixture that obviously stands out is Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad Stadium to face title favourites Manchester City, who will be hoping striker Sergio Aguero will be fit enough to face Jurgen Klopp’s men.
The visitors come into the game off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, Klopp’s first loss since he took over the Anfield hot seat, while Manuel Pellegrini’s are looking to make it ten games unbeaten in all competitions.
Another possible talking point from the weekend comes from St James Park where Premier League top scorer Jamie Vardy could equal Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in 10 consecutive games if he manages to find the net against Newcastle United.
Vardy could miss out for Leicester, however, having been forced to pull out of the England squad with a hip injury and could require a pain-killing injection to play. If he were to score he would become the first man to score in 10 consecutive games in the same season, with Van Nistelrooy’s feat achieved over the course of two.
There’s also a tasty looking London derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday between Tottenham, who haven’t lost since the opening weekend, and away specialists West Ham United.
The Hammers, though, are without influential midfielder Dimitri Payet, who’s set to miss up to three months of the season with the ankle injury which he picked up against Everton.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal will be aiming to keep up the pressure on Manchester City when they face Tony Pulis’ West Brom at the Hawthorns while Champions Chelsea will be hoping for a win of any sorts against plucky Norwich City as they look to makes amends for their worst ever start to a Premier League season.
At Goodison Park, Everton face bottom of the table Aston Villa, in what is the most frequently played top-flight fixture in English footballing history. The away side will be looking to gain some momentum following their 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Remi Garde’s opening fixture as Villa boss.
Elsewhere, Sunderland will be the first North Eastern side to travel to Selhurst Park in the space of a week when they face Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace while Manchester United, who haven’t conceded now in 555 minutes of football will aim for three points at Vicarage Road against surprise package Watford, who sit 8 points clear of the relegation zone in 11th place.
In the other Premier League games, Southampton face Stoke at St Mary’s and Swansea host Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth, who are looking for their first win in 6.
