After putting the fiasco of acquiring goal nets behind them, the Panthers raced out of the blocks and were ahead inside 5 minutes. Top scorer Sam Willett fired in from close range after Dan King had headed Ryan Taylor’s looping corner across goal.
And provider turned scorer just moments later for the second. Captain Oli Birch skillfully jinked his way through three defenders before putting the ball into the path of King, who finished at the second time of asking after his initial attempt was parried by the away side’s goalkeeper.
At the other end, UCA began to cause problems from set pieces, twice being denied on the line by quick reflexes from goalkeeper Matt Milne. And it was their failure to convert that led to the Panthers third.
A goal line clearance from Taylor found Willett on the right hand side, and his long, driven pass allowed King to stride forward from halfway and dink the ball over the advancing keeper, for the home side's third.
And the Panthers didn’t have to wait long to add to their tally of goals for the afternoon. UCA’s failure to clear their lines properly from another in swinging corner was punished by Panny Artemiou, who’s rasping half-volley from the edge of the box nestled into the corner.
The away side did pull a goal back midway through the first half, however, with UCA’s left winger clipping the ball over the head of a stranded Milne after being played through on goal by a clever through ball.
But any hopes this goal gave them were dashed instantaneously, with Willett’s characteristically audacious effort direct from kick-off looping over the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net.
Willett and King would then take it in turns to each complete their respective first-half hat-tricks, the former firing home after pinching the ball of the toes of Artemiou in front of goal and the latter latching onto a pass by striker Brian Maka before driving the ball low under the keeper’s body.
The second half was a much tamer affair in comparison but the Panthers did manage to add to their goal haul.
New man Ollie Salt marked his debut with a well taken goal, coolly slotting home the rebound after Willett had been denied.
But Willett would eventually get his fourth of the game, finishing from close range after the UCA goalkeeper had once again spilled the ball, taking his total for the season to 6.
The home side could’ve taken their total to double figures late on, but striker Brian Maka inexplicably managed to hit the post from inside the six yard box having rounded the goalkeeper.
Tom Dullaway’s side now face a trip to the capital in the second round next week against the University of East London for a place in the last 32.
