The moment that mainstream media and politicians have been building up to for years, arrived in form of a single vote yesterday night. On Wednesday 2nd December, just after 10pm, two thirds of the House of Commons tragically voted in favour of extending airstrikes in Syria, meaning that we’ll now be heading to a full-on war in Syria. In the political chess game that took place in the house of Commons last night, David Cameron called check-mate on the lives of thousands of civilians.
Paris seems to have been the final push these politicians needed to go to a vote. Cameron has, somehow, succeeded in convincing 397 Members of Parliament that bombing innocent civilians in the hopes of eradicating ISIS and ISIL is the ‘right’ step the UK should take, but a simple analysis of statistics show that the war on terror has simply resulted in creating more terror over the years:
Yesterday alone, the Guardian reported that a French journalist who had been held captive by ISIS for a period of 10 months came forward, begging the UK not to bomb Syria, saying this was all ‘a trap that would only benefit ISIS’. He implored the international community to seek an alternative solution such as engaging with the Syrian population, saying that this was the surest way to bring down ISIS once and for all.
His message said: “At the moment, with the bombings, we are more likely pushing the people into the hands of ISIS.” He continued: “As soon as the people have hope in the political situation, then Islamic state will just collapse.”
However, when it comes to wars, history has proven that the logical route has never been the one travelled in politics, and one needs only to observe Saudi Arabia for more proof.
Per year, the UK pumps millions of pounds into the oil industry of their partner in crime Saudi Arabia, who has now become the number one funder of extremism in the world. Conveniently however, the fact that this country beheads and slaughters hundreds more than ISIS, is overlooked by politicians and the mainstream media time after time, and Saudi Arabia is depicted as a friend and ally globally.
The PM and his incredulous followers seemingly forget that ISIL and ISIS are an ideology that cannot be eradicated, no matter how many bombs you drop on Syria. For every extremist that dies at the hands of the UK, another one rises, this one thirstier for blood and revenge than the one that lived before. Meanwhile, this act of humanitarian crisis kills thousands of innocents who are themselves attempting to flee ISIS.
What this entirely non-Islamic terror group has succeeded to spread to its population over the past years has directly resulted in a mass of refugees fleeing their countries in the hopes to find shelter across the European continent, but after Paris, the media has spread its Islamophobic lies enough for no country to willingly accept Muslims. So we’re back to square one. Slowly but surely, through consistent demonisation and generalisation of Islam, the pieces of the puzzle have successfully come together, just in time for a third world war.
On the 3rd of October, a mere month before Paris, a Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan was bombed, killing at least 22 innocent civilians in what the U.S later simply deemed a ‘mistake’. Without assuming real responsibility for the deaths of those it cold-bloodedly took, this sounds like the regurgitated excuse politicians will be using to explain the casualties this war will claim.
In addition to all this human suffering, the British economy will be affected by this war too: a single airstrike mission costs over 500 thousand pounds. In other words, Britain loses 20 Paramedics, 20 Police Officers, 20 Teachers, 19 Nurses, 18 Firefighters and 18 Junior Doctors for every airstrike the government approves.
As the wheel keeps spinning round and round in an endless repetition of history itself, the real takeaway is this: as long as a blind eye is turned to the plight of human suffering, the world will never know peace.
